May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month—a time to raise awareness about communication disorders and the professionals who help individuals find their voices. In recognition of this important month, we have a parent workshop dedicated to supporting families navigating the process of acquiring an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device.
AAC devices are life-changing tools for individuals with complex communication needs. But for many families, understanding how to access these devices—and which path to take—can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’re here to help.
What to Expect from the workshop:
During our workshop, we will break down the different avenues available for obtaining an AAC device, including:
• Through Your Child’s School: Learn about the role of the IEP team, how school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) assess AAC needs, and the support schools can offer.
• Using Health Insurance: Find out what private insurance and Medicaid may cover, how to navigate approvals, and what documentation is typically required.
• Exploring State Loaner Programs: Discover how your state may offer short- or long-term AAC device loans at no cost to families, and how to apply.
• Trial and Evaluation Support: Understand the importance of AAC evaluations and how to request one from qualified professionals.
Guidance Tailored to Your Family’s Needs
Every child’s communication journey is unique, and our session will help you determine the best route for your family. Whether you are just beginning to explore AAC or have already encountered barriers, we aim to equip you with clear, supportive guidance.
Join us next month to learn more about the tools, programs, and professionals who can help your child communicate with confidence and connection.
Stay tuned for workshop details and registration information—we can’t wait to support you on this journey!
